A Timed Assignment

Orders for a Bridge
The mission
General Golz assigns Robert Jordan the demolition of The bridge, but only after the Republican attack begins. The timing is intended to prevent enemy reinforcements from reaching the pass.
The constraint
Jordan understands that an early explosion could defeat the operation’s purpose. He accepts the order while recognizing that the attack’s timing and success are outside his control.
Reconnaissance

Studying the Crossing
The terrain
Robert Jordan and Anselmo observe The bridge from cover, noting its sentry boxes, road approaches, and steel span over the gorge. Jordan sketches the structure and considers where charges will do the most damage.
The danger
The technical task seems manageable; the greater difficulty is coordinating armed groups and keeping the operation concealed until the attack begins.
A Fragile Coalition

Organizing the Bands
Uneven support
Pablo initially refuses to help, fearing that an attack will expose his band. Pilar and several fighters support the mission, and Jordan prepares to proceed even without Pablo’s cooperation.
A workable plan
El Sordo agrees to attack one outpost while Pablo’s people are assigned another. The plan depends on coordination, discipline, and enough men to cover the bridge.
The Plan Unravels

Losing the Advantage
Warning signs
Unusual aircraft and troop movements suggest the enemy may know an offensive is coming. A late snowstorm complicates observation, while El Sordo’s band is caught and destroyed after its horse raid.
Reduced strength
Pablo steals Jordan’s detonators and exploder, then returns with a few recruits. Jordan improvises a grenade-based method, but the losses leave the planned attacks dangerously understrength.
The Span Falls

Completing the Demolition
The attack begins
When the distant bombardment confirms that the offensive has started, Jordan and Anselmo neutralize the bridge sentries and place charges beneath the span. Fighting erupts at the outposts while they work.
Costly success
Jordan detonates the charges as a truck approaches. The center of The bridge collapses, fulfilling his assignment, but Anselmo is killed by falling steel and the offensive has already lost its element of surprise.
